Vangelis ve Yanni gibi bu müziğin en çok tanınan temsilcilerinin başındadır. Ancak, diğerlerinden farklı olarak, müziklerinde Batı formatlı ezgilerden ziyade, parçası olduğu Uzak Doğu kültürünün izleri görülür.

4 Şubat 1953’te Japonya’da dünyaya gelen Kitaro, müzikal ilgi ve becerisini kendi imkânlarıyla geliştirmiş, lise döneminde kurduğu “Albatross” adını taşıyan müzik grubuyla bu alandaki üretiminin ilk eserlerini ortaya koymuştur. Kitaro’nun hayatınını değiştiren iki önemli olay, dönemin ünlü müzisyenleri Fumio Miyashita’yla ve onunla dünya turuna çıktığında Almanya’da karşılaştığı Klaus Schulze’yle tanışması olmuştur; zira ruhsal tedavi ve meditasyon müzikleri yapan Fumio Miyashita sayesinde müziğe bakışı değişmiş, Klaus Schulze vasıtasıyla da ileride müziğinin ana enstrümanı olarak kullanacağı “synthesizer”la tanışmıştır.

Kitaro’nun dünyayı dolaşma macerası, Tayland, Çin, Hindistan ve diğer Asya ülkelerine yaptığı gezilerle devam eder. Felsefi anlamda olgunlaştığı bu dönemlerde, gezip gördüğü yerlerden aldığı etkileri müziğine yansıtmayı da iyi başarmıştır. Hayata bakışını kendi ağzından şöyle özetler, “İç huzuruma kavuşmamı sağlayan olay, doğduğum şehirden kilometrelerce uzakta ve de ona kesinlikle benzemeyen bir başka ülkede, mesela Kalküta’nın herhangi bir sokağındaki bir dilenciyle eşit olduğumu farketmemdir”.

Müzikal anlamdaki bilinen ilk çalışmaları 1980’lerin başından itibaren ortaya çıkmaya başlar. Bu dönemden sonra müziğinde de olgunluk dönemine geçer. Yaptığı müziğe kesin bir etiket koymak yanlısı değildir; genel olarak “müziğinin ruhsallığı çağrıştırdığını ve önemli olan şeyin dinleyiciyi düşünme ve hissetmeye sevketmesi” olduğunu söyler. Yanni’yle benzer yönleri, her ikisinin de müzikal yazma ve okuma eğitiminden yoksun olmasıdır; nota bilgisi olmadığı için kendi tarzını kendisi yaratmıştır, notalar yerine resimler çizer.

Enstrüman çalma becerisi ise Vangelis gibi çeşitlidir, birçok tuşlu, vurmalı ve üflemeli sazı çalabilme yeteneğine sahiptir. Felsefi inanışı ise Budizm ve Şinto geleneklerini temel alır.

Kitaro’nun Türkler tarafından tanınması ve sevilmesi 1980’lerin başında TRT 1’de yayınlanan İpek Yolu Belgeseli’nden hatırlayacağı The Silk Road adlı parçasıyla olmuştur. Japon NHK televizyonunun çektiği belgesel, Kitaro’nun dünya çapında ün kazanmasını sağlamıştı.
